What is Ethereum?

Ethereum is a global, decentralized computer network that anyone can use to send money, store data, or run applications, without needing permission from a bank, company, or government.

Think of it like the internet, but for value and ownership. Just like you can send an email to anyone in the world without asking permission, Ethereum lets you send value (money, digital assets, contracts) to anyone, anywhere, instantly.

Unlike traditional systems controlled by single companies, Ethereum is maintained by thousands of independent computers worldwide, making it extremely difficult to shut down, censor, or manipulate.

Why Ethereum Matters

Ethereum introduced something the internet never had on its own: a way to move value and enforce agreements without a middleman. Banks, payment processors, and app stores have traditionally sat between people and their money, taking fees and control along the way. Ethereum's smart contracts let two strangers transact directly, with the rules written into code instead of a company's terms of service.

That single shift opened the door to an entire ecosystem: decentralized finance (DeFi) letting anyone lend, borrow, or trade without a bank; NFTs proving digital ownership; DAOs letting communities govern shared resources; and, more recently, AI agents using Ethereum's rails to transact with each other autonomously. Whatever comes next in this space, odds are good it's building on Ethereum's foundation.

How Ethereum Actually Works

Ethereum runs on a system called Proof of Stake, where participants called validators lock up ETH to help secure the network and confirm transactions, earning rewards for doing so honestly. Every transaction gets bundled into blocks, verified by thousands of independent validators, and permanently recorded on a public ledger nobody can quietly alter after the fact.

Developers build on top of this foundation using smart contracts, self-executing code that runs exactly as written, with no company able to change the rules after the fact. That's the core idea powering everything from token swaps to lending markets to the AI-agent economy now emerging on top of Ethereum.
